This little guy (girl?) was spotted today by our guests at our grey vacation rental homesteader cabin. That’s a standard garden hose next to him. Any educated guesses as to this young desert tortoise’s age, Our friend Kelly H estimates the animal as being 1 to 2 years old, with lots of new growth. Any idea what native vegetation he’s chomping on?

    Looks like popcorn flower to me. Cryptantha augustifolia. They’re kinda prickly – wouldn’t be my choice for lunch. I wonder if this is the same little guy you found in a coffee cup . . .
