Tues June 4: Caravan to San Bernardino for showdown with Dollar General at the Board of Supervisors’ hearing

From the moment in late 2011 that plans were unveiled to build a 9,100-square foot Dollar General store in Joshua Tree, there has been widespread outrage and organized opposition from the Joshua Tree community to this project.

This conflict is now nearing a conclusion.

This coming Tuesday, June 4, 2013, the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors will be hearing the Joshua Tree Downtown Business Alliance (JTDBA)’s appeal of the Planning Commission’s wrongheaded decision in January to approve a permit for the construction of a 9,100-square foot Dollar General store in Joshua Tree.

If you don’t want to see a Dollar General in Joshua Tree — if you want the Joshua Tree Community Plan to be respected and our village’s character to be preserved — please attend this hearing. Your presence could very possibly sway the Board’s vote.

The JTDBA’s appeal will be made at this hearing by respected attorney Douglas Carstens of Chatten-Brown & Carstens. (Click here for information on how to help cover the JTDBA’s legal fees to fight Dollar General.)

At the hearing, Mr. Carstens will present the case for our appeal for 15 minutes, followed by up to 15 minutes from the other side. Then there will be 5-minute rebuttal periods for each side.

After that, we are told that the Board will hear comments from the public, which are generally limited to 3 minutes each.

If you wish to comment, please avoid repeating what others have already said. And, of course, please dress appropriately.

The Board meets at 10am this Tuesday, June 4 at

Covington Chambers
385 N. Arrowhead Ave., 1st Floor
San Bernardino, CA 92415
(760) 995-8140

There will be a Joshua Tree community carpool caravan to the hearing. We will be meeting at 7:30am and departing at 8:00am sharp from Myrtle the Turtle at Turtle Island in downtown Joshua Tree on Tuesday.

It is a 90-mile drive. Drivers who have been to these offices before will be leading the caravan. If you cannot join our caravan, please still consider attending the Board meeting. Driving/parking directions are below.

If you cannot make the trip to San Bernardino, please consider participating in the Board meeting from the brand new “Remote Video Conferencing Site” here in Joshua Tree. It’s located inside:

Bob Burke Joshua Tree Government Center
63665 Twentynine Palms Highway
Joshua Tree, CA 92252

More information and rules about how you can participate in a Board meeting at this remote site are available in this small PDF.

If you need more information now about the hearing, contact San Bernardino County’s Land Use Service Department at (909) 387-8311.
