Nest decor / flowers for a lost hatchling

Two weeks ago this communally operated House Finch (Carpodacus mexicanus) nest in our front porch lamp was brazenly assaulted in broad daylight by Mr. Pink, the local red racer coachwhip (Masticophis flagellum piceus) snake. He got one hatchling after climbing up a hanging electrical cord. The other escaped (we think). The adult finches saw what was going on but were powerless to do anything. It was brutal.

In the last few days, a new finch couple have been scouting out the nest, checking to see if it’s acceptable lodging. Apparently it is, because yesterday they began to decorate it…

    that sucks, but good news about the new tenants! i’m assuming you moved the hanging electrical cord?
