Young wild desert tortoise on expedition for chow

Photos by Stephanie Smith of this young wild desert tortoise (Gopherus agassizii) that she came across while on her daily run this morning. This animal was maybe a thousand feet from our house.

(And yes, we were careful not to handle, touch or harass the tortoise in any way.)

The desert tortoise is California’s state reptile. Its Mojave population is listed as “threatened.”
