Photo by Stephanie Smith. Small, yellow-eyed black birds have undone a loose nail and pulled two boards apart, managing to get inside an eave on our main house’s roof, where they have since constructed a nest. Or three, they’re industrious. They’re quick too—it’s been impossible so far to get a good snap of what appear to our amateur eyes to be
miniature great-tailed Grackles (short-tailed mini Grackles?). We’ll hammer that nail back in after they definitively leave, probably in the fall.
Update: The birds have been identified as European Starlings.
