Compost heap

Photograph by Stephanie Smith

In the style I first learned from Altadena compost wizard Tim Dundon, this is our new compost heap, made out of lotsa horse manure (courtesy of C & C), kitchen leavings, ashes from the bbq and firepits, paper, cardboard and desert sand. The sand on top is kept wet, forming a loose crust. Stick your arm halfway to your elbow into this heap and you will feel the heat of stuff being broken down into grade-AAA soil: raw life.
